The Know-How

Southwest Genetics hosts multiple Artificial Insemination courses throughout the winter months, now at Southwest Genetics located in Blumenort, Saskatchewan. The 3-day courses teach the entire process of AI for cattle. Students are taught every aspect of the art of AI from proper handling of semen to using stress-free techniques on the animal.

AI course instruction includes the following in the three-day course:

  • Each student receives a new AI Applicator. Universal applicator as it will accept 1/4 & 1/2 cc straws. Yours to keep. $75.00 value
  • Everything is supplied from a hot homemade lunch to the cows that we use. All you need to bring is warm barn cloths & muck boots. Everything is inside one facility but it is winter and a barn.
  • Individual, personal instruction as only a maximum of 8 people per course.
  • I go over the reproductive anatomy and the names of all parts involved.
  • The estrus cycle and hormones involved.
  • Heat detecting and synchronization programs for cows and heifers.
  • Proper semen handling and thawing procedures.
  • Modern AI techniques and procedures with personal instruction.
  • Nutrition for a successful program.
  • We touch on EPD’s and how to read them.
  • Cost for this coming season is $1250.00 plus GST
  • A $250.00 nonrefundable deposit will hold your spot in the course you choose. This is on a first paid basis until the course is full.

All accommodations are available in Swift Current Sask. and the course site is only 20 miles South on #4 highway. Course times are 9am-4pm daily. A fun and casual learning experience for everyone involved.
